David, i don't know if you do it yourself or you have other people read the comments, but my husband comes from NY & has the attitude to go with it.both my husband & i (i think) have bipolar not to the extent that some people do but certainly its there in some form.i do believe in years to come they will find out that a lot of people more than they had expected have some form of it, do because of the air we breathe, the water we drink, & the food we eat. each one of these produces thousand of chemicals that plays havoc with our brains especially in water & foods, we are inundated with chemicals from birth to old age we never used to be along time ago but now welcome to the new age, so you see trying to get my husband to at least admit to it is overwhelming for him let alone listen to me with my rhetoric & he is a no nonsense kind of man. I only wish then what I know now about getting your loved one (my husband of 52 years) into treatment. I'm not sure what David did for his Mom to get her to the hospital for treatment, but can only tell you my story. I only had one alternative.(No Doctor or myself with pleading, begging, promises or shear hysteria from crying that went on for almost 3 weeks)NADA - absolutely nothing could persuade him to even listen. Just ask yourself, how do you get through to someone in complete denial? You can't. Unfortunately, the only alternate was an ex-parte.I had called two Crisis centers, paid a lawyer, even called the ambulance (he refused to go (denial of course) so there is no way to take him if he does not go voluntarily. Finally calling police - they also sent an ambulance and rescue but again he refused, told them it was me (people with bi polar can be extremely coy and rational when authorities are involved- very scary)I got the impression they actually thought I I was trying to railroad him. I won't go into the rest of the horror right now, but when the police decided to leave, unfortunately I panicked just to think of the consequences of what I did - not thinking, hypothetically I blurted out that he could kill me or I could even kill myself(WRONG) they performed the Baker Act on me, handcuffed me and took me to the State Mental Facility leaving him at the kitchen table(which reminded me of Knights of the Roundtable, if you get my drift). (even though I had all of the papers from a previous commitment, being fully untrained they never thought to hear me out. Thank God they finally let me call one of our daughters, a nurse in NC who was apprised of her father's condition. Also some of the people I do volunteer work with stood by me. It is not the end of this story, but God has given me many angels to watch over us and through the VA, after 3 weeks hospitalization,he is doing so well under treatment and things are back to normal. I don't know if this will ever happen again, one can never let your guard down, but we take one day at a time and that's all I can ask for. And by the way, if there is anyone I know of with bi polar, I am more than willing to talk with them to ease at least a small part of their burden. Thanks for listening.
